Oral Administration of Perilla (Perilla frutescens) Leaves Extract Inhibited the Increase of Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha, Interleukin-6 and Did Not Inhibit the Increase of Foam Cell Amount in Obese Wistar Rats (Rattus norvegicus)

Background: Obesity is a disorder involving excessive fat accumulation which increases the formation of reactive oxygen species that leads to inflammation and atherosclerosis. Perilla (Perilla frutescens) leaves possess anti-inflammatory effects rich in antioxidants, such as terpenoid, carotenoid, phenol, flavonoid. The purpose this study was prove whether administration perilla extract may have an inhibitory effect towards build-up TNF-alpha, IL-6, foam cell obese Wistar rats. Methods: This research experimental randomized post-test only control group design. Samples were 34 male rats (Rattus norvegicus) aged 6-8 weeks. samples divided into 2 groups, namely administered with high diet placebo (distilled water), treatment allotted dose 500 mg/kg rat weight for 4 TNF-alpha IL-6 measured by ELISA method from blood serum, examined histopathology examination ascending aorta. data analyzed using T-independent test. Results: results showed there significantly lower outcome mean level 80.09±1.64 pg/mL 60.40±1.35 (p<0.001). Similarly, 0.67±0.00 0.51±0.08 (p<0.05). There no significant difference cell, p value 0.215 even though 1.78±2.60 cells/field view 0.70±1.72 view. Conclusions: From outcomes study, it could be concluded oral inhibited increase TNF alpha levels levels, but did not inhibit amount rat.
